Summer Newsletter: What are you wearing?
I recently went to a summer parade in rural Wisconsin. As the dermatologist in the crowd, I was more interested in watching people than the fire trucks in the parade. The number of tank tops and racer tops worn in the blazing sun of summer completely amazed me. What were these people thinking? No shade, direct sun and no protection on the shoulders and upper back with sunburns a certainty! Luckily, help is on the way. There is increasing awareness of the need for physical protection from the sun. Clothing manufacturers are part of this and are marketing light-weight shirts and rash guard shirts for everyday use as well as swimming and water sports. These shirts are a critical part of melanoma prevention and are now becoming more mainstream. Use physical protection from the sun with protective shirts and rash guards!
