California recently became the first state in the Union to ban the use of tanning bads by minors. This is a significant step in the right direction. We have known for some time now that use of tanning beds is a health concern. Studies have shown increased incidence of melanoma skin cancer in individuals who use the tanning booth more than intermittently. This is particularly true with young women. We in this office have diagnosed melanoma in young women at the age of 18. We have attempted similar legislation here in Minnesota but have been unsuccessful in getting such a broad reaching ban passed. Keep in mind that several countries around the world, including Brazil, have banned indoor tanning entirely. We continue to advise our patients to avoid indoor tanning entirely.
